Allow me to illustrate what’s becoming a pet peeve with the most adorable cover of anything ever.
“A British accent.” “My character has a British accent.” “I am talking in a British accent.”
1) There are four countries in Britain.
2) If you mean an English accent:
a) In American English, there is such a thing as a General American accent. Many people in many states across many social classes all speak in this accent.
b) There is no such thing as a general English accent.
Do you mean the accent of, say, Matt Smith as the Doctor? OK. Here is a comprehensive list of people who actually speak in that accent.
i) Characters in BBC dramas
ii) Some of the people who make BBC dramas
iii) A few other rich people who live within a few square miles of the main BBC studios
iv) Their children, who can sometimes be found in universities elsewhere, behaving horrendously
THAT IS IT, NO REALLY, THAT IS EVERYONE WHO TALKS LIKE THAT
