Allow me to illustrate what’s becoming a pet peeve with the most adorable cover of anything ever.
“A British accent.” “My character has a British accent.” “I am talking in a British accent.”
1) There are four countries in Britain.
2) If you mean an English accent:
a) In American English, there is such a thing as a General American accent. Many people in many states across many social classes all speak in this accent.
b) There is no such thing as a general English accent.
Do you mean the accent of, say, Matt Smith as the Doctor? OK. Here is a comprehensive list of people who actually speak in that accent.
i) Characters in BBC dramas
ii) Some of the people who make BBC dramas
iii) A few other rich people who live within a few square miles of the main BBC studios
iv) Their children, who can sometimes be found in universities elsewhere, behaving horrendously
